23 August 2011

My Master Thesis

I can finally publish this most expected post, my master´thesis!!
Here is the abstract in both English and Spanish:

Abstract

This paper focuses on the dilemmas that are part of the nowadays normal functioning of the social services system. The conflicts of efficiency, distribution, satisfaction and quality of service that rises between the social agents involved, the articulation between these agents and the system, and specially the configuration of the system to prevail in its functioning.

The way the system deals with these dilemmas results in the displacement of the human-beings from the centre of the processes, to be substituted by auto-centred aspects of the system itself that de-humanize its functioning.

While describing the conflicts present in the system and their consequences, a set of needed inputs to improve it was established. The conclusion is that a new perspective behind the functioning of the system is required in order to overcome the existing dilemmas. The paper also presents a proposal of humanization of the processes through the insertion of “human” or “emotional” aspects that responds to a new ideology that aims to balance the efficiency-quality issue of the social services provision system.

Some weeks ago I was contacted by the office of graduate students of my former university: INTEC.
They told me about re-launching the magazine of the college´s spirit and if I could share a bit of my experience abroad. With a few questions to guide the idea provided by them, I manage to elaborate this:

Feeling good about the IDMs

It was an idea birth from the active minds of Prakash and Ki Sung: to gather students, to create an open space of meeting. Sure great things could come out from putting together groups of young spirits “in transit” on the city of Oslo, some might think of them as future leaders, some as soldiers of the army of peace and some as the today´s adventurers that will inherit the Earth… anyhow, we were here in Oslo and the invitation to meet other people, to have a place “in English” to meet and talk, to have free dinner and the chance of planning going-outs, parties and any other crazy idea… is very motivating.

I have always enjoyed being there, but the initial fun of attending those meetings changed to the responsibility of organize it (or help to organize it) in the moment I said yes to Ki Sung to replace Prakash in these tasks. Luckily…or not, we decided to make this activity through ISU, the International Student Union that I was already President. So, at least for me this was some sort of luck, because it was not a personal responsibility, but a collective one, an institutional one.

Thus, for me to be there was still fun in a way, but not in a full sense, I guess that the same things I was doing are the things that I´ll normally do, but the fact that it had some dependence on me or that I was somehow responsible for it changed the way to appreciate it. To be before time to help and welcome people and go later after cleaning or organizing, to talk with different people and try to include them into conversations, to know if the cookers are ok and support Ki Sung on making them have everything they need, to find guest speakers and be really in attention to what they say, to motivate and find volunteers cookers for the upcoming meetings and finally to also enjoy the meeting… was somehow not the same.

Luckily for me, I insists, this was now part of the ISU activities, so when I started to have more workload and responsibilities with other stuffs, I could depend on the ISU´s Board to organize the meetings by distributing the tasks. From the logistics point of view, it was working very well. But perhaps something else was emerging.

I started to hear feedback of students not eager to participate in the meetings because being afraid that it had an ulterior and not clear intentions, others will show dissatisfaction because they felt tricked by the intentions of the meeting and finally myself was feeling that the main supporter and founder of this initiative, the IMCO, was getting and letting flow some pressure about objectives and intentions that were not stated from the beginning.

Is a common saying that “there is not free meal”, and perhaps the International Methodist Church of Oslo had it clear from the very beginning: the meetings were an open space for international students, where among many of the things we make, plan, think and do (without any support or meeting place), this International Dinner Meeting will be “also” a place for see a fresh face of this Christian Church and a call to join it. In fact, many students understood this, “we get free dinner, with the condition of hearing motivational speeches about how good is to have Christ in your life”. I guess a considerable number of them deal with this situation very straight forward and could manage to get the most out of it, separating their intention of eating and meeting people and the intentions of the meeting of showing the relevance of God in their life. The IMCO´s intention could be accomplished and their intention of participating as well.

I personally trusted the statements written, where no Christian profession or evangelization was expressed. Just by wordily statements it was mention that the spirituality will find its place and way in the participants’ beings. I must confess that I was a bit sad when I realized that the International Dinner Meetings where kind of heading to a conflict of principles. The principle of No-religions or that all-religions should be included. At this point, it was to hard to separate the IMCO´ intentions and the ISU´ intentions.

In the last IDM I participated, even dough we made the General Assembly and the Elections, I could overcome those feelings. It was actually the fact of knowing that after that meeting I will no longer be in the ISU, no longer with the responsibility of dealing with the tasks of the IDM and the issue of the conflict of principle no longer my burden (of course I did my part on trying to solve it or propose solutions). Just the fact of feeling as a “normal” or “just another participant”, made me so free and relax that I could say now, that this was the IDM that I have enjoyed most. Food was great (Estonian by the way), conversations, people (most of them new students) and the feeling that this is for fun and the fun will continue after the meeting… it was just like I picture it when I first attended. I guess that´s the way international students imagine it will be when they decide to attend. An interesting speech is always welcome, to present motivational life experiences is a great asset to have in the IDM to complement our experience of growing and learning. Bur since Christianity is not the only way to be happy, to find yourself and be with God, I think these IDM should not be seeing as a Christianity´ promotion activity.

I hope this issue gets solved; this experience of the IDM is a great asset of both ISU and the IMCO; is now a pillar in the experience of the international students in the OUC.

I now see two ways: clarity of procedures and intentions or separation of activities. Anyhow I know that Ki Sung and the Board members are the best persons to find a feasible and successful exit to this.

Handling-over.

I did not realize it until some hours later, after I arrived home. The feeling was completely good. Only then it came into my mind, I tried to remember a similar experience, but I failed. This was indeed the first time I could officially hand-over something.

I have been involved in many groups, activities, initiatives. But either I just pass by it, or is a short project that just ends after me or my participation, or there is no people for the continuation of it, or by many circumstances I don´t get to meet or the chance to hand-over to the person continuing whatever is what I was doing.

So this time, for the first time in my life, I was seeing a continuation project, I got the feeling that I was part of something big, that I made my contribution and that the project will go on and I´ll just be a witness of a collective effort made by many “siblings in intentions”. I served, trying to give my best, and now others can also serve. That´s actually a great feeling!

The end of the winter boots.

Two winters have past, two winters I have survive in Norway, this Scandinavian season full of great and interesting things is a very practical way of learning the meaning and utility of the famous Norwegian saying: “there is not bad weather, just bad clothing”. I learn to use wool, winter underwear, double pants, jackets, lipstick, lotions, scarf, gloves, hats and caps. I learn to appreciate spicy food, to love even more the hot chocolate, that a long cup of coffee is not just about the taste, but also a hand-warming and a break to get-warm, an unavoidable habit.

The rather boring ceremony of putting layers of clothing on top to go out and take them down to go in, could be forgotten just after a nice trip to the mountains for cross country skiing in the gorgeous Norwegian nature. Some waffles, with jam, sour cream and brown cheese is the official taste of this paradisiacal Norwegian winter moment. I strongly believe that the “Glog” should be drink more often in this season. I have also incorporated the “Te” culture. :)

After the final rides of fun sliding in Frogneseteren, it was obvious that it was time for a new stage. My boots told me so, after all this time of getting to appreciate and love the Norwegian culture, the road continues, but the shoes have to be different.

The cities of Bergen, Hønefoss, Lillehammer, Drammen, Narvik and Porsgrunn are my samples of inland; the images, experiences, views, sounds, people, tastes, colors and memories offered there, all comes with me.

I like the road ahead of me; I like that I can back-up my steps with all that I’m taking from this 18 months in Norway. The boots now rest in peace, only the Gods know which are the shoes that I’ll use now. If it is for me, I can start walking even bare footed.

Let it snow! Second winter in Oslo

Last year around the 16th of October it was snowing for the first time in Oslo, it was the first time for me that I experienced the transition from one season to another. But the winter had started for me long time before.

2 weeks after arriving I went on a trip to a Mariapolis to Bergen, the second biggest city of Norway. In that road we stopped to have an open air pick nick , supposedly in a nice landscape. For me the temperature of 8° was to much to tolerate and my bread seemed to be alive! my hands were shaking, I had my mouth open in case I could make get it inside, but I also think I opened too much so close it could be a problem!

I had to enter back to the car, kill the sandwich, get a little warm up and then.... eat.

This year is completely different, the "real" cold of the winter took longer to arrive, even the snow was maybe thinking to wait until Christmas day. Is just today when one can finally say that is snowing in Oslo. The threes change from the ugly leaves-less image to a nice white dress. Now is all nice, good looking white and winter-like image.

The cold is another tale, I took it a lot much better this time, was not feeling even half of the coldness I felt last year, but a remainder that I´m not from this weathers came like a month ago with a sudden high fever, according to me, I was wearing too few clothes, I mean, I was not feeling cold enough to wear more. But I learned my lesson, now I don´t mind wearing extra wool, having fever is really bad.

Narvik: I was there!

Situated in the arctic landscape of Norther Norway, the location is perfect. The town is surrounded by astonishing nature, mountains and fjords, something that characterizes… bla, bla, bla and more brochure bla, bla…

For me, Narvik is a small cozy town with more history than inhabitants, a very lovely place to visit, everything is in a fair walk distance but especially the mountains are very near, for ski lovers this is probably a dream town.

Between the beautiful mountains and the shores of the fjord, the landscapes constitute an unforgettable panorama, totally worth to see. For many of us just knowing that to be in Narvik means crossing the Polar Circle latitude line was already an attractive idea that rendered the whole trip more fun.

We were students from many places of the world, studying in many universities and colleges in Norway, gathered to celebrate the National Assembly of the International Student Union. The host branch made a fantastic job from the beginning to the end; it seems that the passion and charismas of the internationals together with the Narvik style of hospitality is a very effective combination.

Being in the northern part of Scandinavia also means the possibility of seeing the natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights or Polar Lights. Our eyes to the sky were raised many times by all of us during the nights. One of us claimed, and still assures, that we saw it, a weak one, but one!! For the few of us who got that “lucky” chance, is up to each one to try to see “another” or to erase that item from the to-do list.

A lot of non-peaceful situations had happen in Narvik throughout time, when moving around the town is impossible to not get immerge in those pieces of history. Is a little city were people have a hard-working tradition, enough things and facts to be proud of and few offers for night life activities, and of course the fun is your own responsibility. Is a kebab-free town (at least for what we could see) in which, with the excellent guide of the “internationals-locals” can become a terrific city to experience and have exciting adventures.

Trip to Polar Ship Museum

Last Sunday I went to the Norwegian Ships Museum with 3 Italians that came to visit Norway, they were in Bergen and Oslo (That remains me that I haven´t really see much about Bergen, maybe I should pay the second city of Norway a visit, I have also seen that there is a fight with Trodheim about being the 2nd city) Anyway, they stayed in my place for a couple of nights and the day they made the tour in Oslo I join them, at least for the morning. So they decided to visit the Bygdoy side, and we went to the Polar Ship Fram.
I´m not very fond of boats, so stories about Viking ships doesn’t amaze me, but I must say, after seeing the size of this ship and thinking on all the seas it went through I change my mind about boats (just a little bit dough). This ship is one of the first ones to be in both the South Pole and the North Pole and is more than a 100 years old. So it´s have something to tell.
After the bla, bla, bla of the transcendence of those trips in the long ago years that they made it, with the very small technology available, the scientific touch behind those trips that keep pushing and giving a lot of sense to the journeys (so it won´t be just the economical reasons pushing), their contribution to the openness of the Western World to, for them, new cultures, but also the discipline, sacrifice and persistence need to put up enormous trips like these.
I have to add, because I felt it, was not sure if is worth to have some reflection about it, especially because I just stated in my profile description to be a “young adventurer”, now I have to be sure if everything that I state there is really reflecting myself. So far is doing it. Because what I got from the visit to that museum is to think which are my “poles”, if I have any, and if I´m willing to do a long journey to them, with my available resources and which would be my reasons to do it.
A lot of big and deep questions arise, maybe wondering in life trying my best to be happy is not enough, and maybe I really need a “pole” to walk towards. Or yet, perhaps I don´t.
A lot to think about, I hope to do it properly, step by step in slow motion, giving enough time and space to each aspect. Maybe I need to discover that land that will be my pole.
